Supermarket giant Asda is currently reviewing its instore bakeries with a view to using a centralised operation that would then send out pre-baked products to 341 stores to be warmed up in-store. The move would impact up to 1200 jobs.

Derek Lawlor, head of marketing at Asda, said: “The changes we are proposing will deliver a much better and more consistent bakery offering for customers across all our stores.

“We know these proposed changes will be unsettling for colleagues and our priority is to support them during this process.”

The retailer is currently going through the consultation process with its staff who currently bake products on-site from scratch. Asda says that customers buying habits have changed and demand for speciality breads, wraps, bagels and pancakes now outstrip demand for traditional loaves.
